That means that our fortnightly grocery shop has to cover all meals for our little family (at home, with my in-laws, we only cater for 5 dinners a fortnight and all breakfasts and lunches for our little family).
We do all our grocery shopping at Pak 'n' Save with the occasional throw in of Mad Butcher or the local fruit and vegetable shop if they have good specials.

Good morning lovelies! This fortnight is full of some great recipes and great tips to make your groceries stretch and work for your family. So check your pantry, make your list and plan your meals for the this fortnight (or week). Have a fabulous day!

Please keep in mind I do not use the traditional meal planning format which is planning exactly what meal is eaten on which day. Instead I figure out how many meals I need to plan for for this fortnight and then decide what we feel like eating for those meals (of course using my pantry and freezer as a starting point for these plans).

This fortnight there are a total of 15 dinners, of those 15 meals we are planning to eat at our families for 4 of these meals, leaving 11 meals I need to plan for.

beef rump steak, homemade mushroom sauce, vegetables, roast potatoes

meatloaf, veges, mashed potatoes & kumara, gravy

lamb shoulder chops, creamed spinach, veges, mashed potatoes & kumara

homemade pizza and possibly oven fries

homemade burgers and oven fries

spaghetti or baked beans on toast

fajita's

angus beef sausages, mashed potatoes & kumara, veges, gravy

honey soy beef and vegetable stir fry with rice

chicken pasta (cooked and frozen in our freezer already)

butter chicken and rice

NB: Vegetables are usually an assortment of broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, sweet corn.

It has been a month since I last posted. It is hard work running a family and a business and sometimes it can all become a bit too much. I do wish I had kept up with this blog though over the last 1-2 years as so much has happened that I could have been writing about, however one must not dwell on the past and instead look into the future and think of all the things to come.

Looking on the bright side has become a mantra of sorts with our family of late, as we start dealing with some possible medical outcomes that will change our sons life forever. We are currently awaiting on multiple hospital appointments to check on our sons development. One appointment is because he has been dropping percentiles when it comes to his growth (length/height) since he was born and has recently started dropping into the 9th percentile for someone of his age (he's approximately the height of a one year old but is the almost two years old). Another appointment we are waiting on is to check his development/behaviour as a whole as there is a possibility he has ASD/Asperger's. We are hoping that an early diagnosis will mean a greater outcome for him in the long run especially as he enters the schooling system. The final appointment we are waiting on is a Speech Language Therapist appointment to check on his eating, biting, drinking from a cup and talking due to his tongue tie and also to confirm him as non-verbal due to the possible ASD/Asperger's. He just does not talk. I will no doubt have multiple posts of our journey through all of this.

A lot is happening behind the scenes, although it might not look like it when you visit, I am currently making all new graphics, headers etc so that I can easily switch the blog over for re branding.

As I mentioned in my clean slate post, we have moved house three times in the last year and currently we are living with DH's parents in their house. This is hard work, and no doubt will be a very common topic in my posts ahead.

With the birth of our son and our family dropping down to one income earner, I opened a new business Hewie - Baby & Mum specialising in quality products for my baby and mum at pocket friendly prices. I stock products that I find/found difficult to find or that were priced out of my reach.

Make sure to check out our website and our Facebook page.

<strike>When</strike> If things start dying down around here, I may be able to transfer everything in the blog over sooner then I'm hoping for. Otherwise just keep checking back in here to see if the re branding has been completed and while you're around make sure to read any posts I've popped up.

I aplogise my lovely readers, I have been slack! My last post was way back in July 2014.
A lot has happened since then....

I have had a baby who is now a thriving 19 month old

We have moved house three times - more on that later

I have launched my own business! - I will dedicate a whole post to that'

Plus the usual celebrations, sadness, weddings...the list goes on!

Keep an eye on the blog, over the next few weeks I will refresh the look, update things and start dedicating more time to post updates and small snippets of our life.
I'm still considered high risk but my midwife, obstetrician and maternity physician are all safely saying I will make it to 40 weeks. While this is great news, I have decided to go with the 'what if he comes early scenario?' so the second step after making sure we have everything ready in his nursery is to pack for the hospital. (I have been officially packed ready for the hospital since I was approx 30 weeks).

After Googling many different packing lists, ready numerous blog posts and forums and watching countless videos I think I have come up with a list of everything to pack that is relevant to myself and giving birth in a public hospital in New Zealand.

I am making sure that everything I pack works for both a natural birth or a cesarean section birth as I currently do not know what will happen. Also keep in mind, sadly I will not be transferring to Birthcare after the birth as I am required to stay in hospital for approx 3-5 days due to needing a pain pump machine for my Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) and to see if I suffer from Inter-cranial Hypertension post birth (I suffered from this during my second trimester).

Below is everything that I have packed to take with me to the hospital, remember everyone is different and likes different things for comfort. Leave a comment below letting me know what you took, or are taking.

Tri-Pillow & Case - Everything I read recommended taking my own pillow with me to the hospital to make it more comfortable. I have decided to take my tri-pillow with me as it can play double duty. First it is a great pillow to use to prop me up in bed to make it more comfortable but it can also be used as a breastfeeding pillow (as baby grows I can also use it to prop him up).
Maternity Bra - An essential for any woman even if you don't plan on breastfeeding, as they will give you the much needed support you'll require.
Soft Sports Bra - Throughout the course of my pregnancy I have found soft sports bras the perfect bras to sleep in. There's no under wire digging into you anywhere, they're super comfy as they 'mold' so to speak to your breasts shape and they're super soft. I have also found the ones I have to be quite 'movable' (easy to pull down to gain access to the breast for breastfeeding).
Nighty - I picked up a great 'granny' nighty from our local Kmart (similar to Target and Walmart). It has three buttons down the front which allow me easy access for breast feeding but it is also nice enough that I won't mind being seen in it by visitors or have my photo taken in it. It will also make a nice change from hospital gowns. I chose a nighty over pyjamas for the simple fact of if I have to have a c-section I have heard that not only does the band of pyjama bottoms rub against your wound, it can also be hard to bend to pull down and up pants, hence a nighty is super simple and easy.
Robe - This is not a necessity but I thought it would be something I might like to have. It will keep me warm while also giving me some added privacy for when I'm up and about and walking throughout the hospital.
Trackpants - with roll top waist band.
Loose fitting breast feeding tops - I am only taking one of these with me to pair with my track pants once I feel like getting 'dressed' so to speak. Otherwise I plan on wearing a hospital gown to birth in and for the first few hours post birth, then my 'granny' nighty.
Nipple Cream - I am taking Bepanthan. This cream doubles as both my nipple cream and my nappy cream.
Breast Pads - I am taking 4 pairs of disposable breast pads and also 2-3 pairs of reusable breast pads. I don't know if my milk will come in while I am in the hospital but I am currently leaking colostrum so regardless I will be needing them.
Toiletries - shampoo, conditioner, deodarant, toothpaste, toothbrush, hairbrush, hairties and clips, body wash, moisturiser
Maternity Pads - My hospital does supply maternity pads, but I am also taking 1 pack myself and also a couple of Night Time pads.
Light weight cardy - Just a light weight throw on type pullover (cardy), something that will keep me warm while still allowing me to breast feed easily.
Notebook & Pen - the nurses, midwives and doctors are going to tell you a lot of information and tips most of which you will not remember in post birth haze. A notebook and pen will allow you and your partner to take notes to refer to when you get home.
Camera & Spare Battery - A must for capturing all those special first moments with your bundle of joy. I am also packing a spare battery just in case.
Phone & Charger - A must for everyone, it's a great way to keep in touch with friends and family while in the hospital. Also great for letting people know when your special one has arrived.
Wheat bag -
Lip Balm - I suffer from extremely dry lips, ever since I had braces as a teenager, so I am taking both a tube balm type lip balm and also Lucas' Pawpaw Ointment for when I really need good coverage.
Flannel (wash cloth) - This is so that I can wash my face to make myself feel better (hospitals can make you feel quite gross even when all you're doing is just lying there) and also for use in the shower.
Luxury Toilet Paper - I kid you not, our hospital has the grossest thinnest toilet paper imaginable. I will be taking a roll (or two) of luxurious 3 ply soft toilet paper for post birth comforts.
Stress Ball - I have a very high pain tolerance for which I am extremely grateful, the way I like to manage my pain so as not to need pain killers is to distract myself so to speak from the pain itself. Usually by reading, talking, just allowing myself to block the outside world out and also squeezing a stress ball. This may also help save the Hubby's hands while I'm in labour as well.
Snacks - I am taking some mixed nuts, muesli bars and Up & Go Breakfast drinks with me. These will give me sustenance as needed post baby when breastfeeding etc.
Water Bottle - An easy quick way to keep my fluids up while in labour and in the hospital in general as I find sipping water from a bottle an easy way to take in lots of fluids without really realising it.
Maxi Dress - This is mainly for coming home. I will have the Hubby bring this in to me closer to when I will be discharged.
Granny Undies - I just picked up some basic cheap black underwear from The Warehouse. I got 5 in a packet for $6 so I do not mind one bit if at the end they go in the rubbish. I made sure to get ones that would go nicely over any c-section wound.

Entertainment

Magazines - This is both an entertainment factor for my husband and myself. Hospitals can be very boring places even if you do have a newborn baby. But there will be times when baby is asleep and/or not with you.
Tablet & Charger - I have decided to take my tablet in with me to the hospital as its very versatile. Both my husband and I can read e-books on it, we can surf the internet and play games together. We have also loaded it up with movies to watch.
Playing Cards - The Hubby and I are great game players both card and board. We will probably take a couple of our favourite card games - UNO and Skip Bo. This is a great way to pass the time while we wait for my labour to progress and also a nice distraction from any pain. They will also come in handy once baby is here for when we just need something to pass the time while I am still in hospital.

For Hubby

Hubby will have the ability to go home and freshen up while myself and baby stay in hospital. But just in case we have decided to pack a few basics for him.
Deodorant, toothbrush, socks, t-shirt, jumper, change for vending machines.

(I have been officially packed for baby since I was approx 30 weeks).

Unlike when it came to deciding what to pack for myself, I did not use google or blog posts or forums to decide what to pack for baby. Instead I used the knowledge of my mother :) She has been there done that twice now so she has some experience when it comes to this kinda stuff.

On her recommendations, below is everything that I have packed to take with me for baby to the hospital, remember everyone is different and different hospitals supply different things. Leave a comment below letting me know what you took, or are taking.

Wrap - Just a basic cotton wrap that I was given by a friend at our baby shower. This can be used to wrap baby, as a light weight blanket or a nursing cover the possibilities are endless.
Blanket - I have packed a heavier blanket just in case extra warmth is needed, although they do like to keep the maternity ward at my hospital quite warm for all the little newborns. It may come in hand when transporting baby home though.
Wipes - My hospital does not supply wipes while you are there. I am taking a small packet of generic baby wipes.
Nail Clippers - I read somewhere online that taking nail clippers with you can be a good idea as some babies can be born with quite long nails and the hospital will not cut them for you.
Nappy Cream - I am taking Bepanthan. This cream doubles as both my nappy cream and my nipple cream.
Flat Nappy - This is an 'old school' style flat nappy. These can be so handy for all sorts of different things - burp cloths, wraps, blankets.
Dummy - Obviously we don't know if our little baby will like dummies (pacifiers) or if they're a thumb sucker or if they just don't prefer anything. But I figured it wouldn't hurt to take one with us just in case, better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it.
Nappies - My hospital does supply disposable nappies while we are there. I am taking 3 disposable nappies with me, these are mainly for our trip home from the hospital you never know what might happen. We do plan on using cloth nappies once we are home and have the hang of the whole parenting and baby thing.
Layette Stuff - hats, mittens, gowns, onesies, cardigan, socks, booties

Going Home Outfit - I will be getting my husband to bring in one of two going home outfits we have chosen once the time comes. We chose two outfits in two different sizes to be baby's coming home outfit, once we have an idea of baby's size, the Hubby will bring in the appropriate one once its time to go home. This means that I will not be carting things into the hospital when I'm in labour that I do not need until a later date.
Car Seat - We have decided to not use a capsule for baby and instead have opted for a convertible car seat. This is mainly for safety reasons (capsules have been found to be unsafe for babies for long periods of time, they can also lead to 'lazy parenting' whereby baby is not handled enough by parents) and also for savings, a convertible car seat will last us longer. The car seat will be installed in my car, which is also to be the family car, ready for when baby can come home.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06543118546560759488noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3929141456990376009.post-85829886136831111892014-07-30T13:42:00.001+12:002016-02-03T12:16:18.243+13:00Tea Time: Favourite Tea Of The Month

We have finally managed to find a campground/holiday park that has space over New Years!

As a family (myself, hubby, my parents and occasionally my sister) we like to go camping every year in Summer during the Christmas-New Year Holiday period. Generally we go after Christmas and come back in the new year sometime.

This year we decided that having a new little baby (approx 3 month old) would not stop us from going camping, it would just mean that sleeping arrangements would have to be adjusted to take into account a small baby. Therefore we decided that as usual Mum and Dad would take a powered site for their pop-top camper and the hubby and I would try to find a cabin in the same campground or holiday park. This would enable us to have an all weather sleeping arrangement which was more suitable to a small baby and we could make Mum and Dad's site the main camp for during the day and evenings.

Well trying to find somewhere that had both a powered site and a cabin available for the same dates was proving hard, and we were starting to have to come up with Plan B's and C's or scrapping the idea all together. That is until Dad found somewhere! And to top it off, we've been to this holiday park before and it is great! Designed with families in mind, it has everything we will need to enjoy a camping trip this year with baby.

We are heading to Bowentown near Waihi Beach in the Coromandal/Bay of Plenty and we can't wait!

We head off boxing day and get back to Auckland around the 3rd January.

I will be posting a recap of our camping trip along with how we packed for the trip with a baby and how we managed the small road trip to get to the holiday park.

After an eventful start to the move with the movers turning up 2 and a half hours late, it all worked out in the end. The new house is amazing! And so much bigger then our old place and we have a garage with rumpus/sleep out attached :D We have never had the luxury of a garage before, and all the added benefits that come with it. I can't wait to have everything organised and for once have somewhere to store all those seasonal and sometimes items that don't belong in the house.

Make sure you keep an eye out for future posts about the house. I will endeavour to do a photo tour of the new place once we have finished unpacking and I have decorated how I would like.

Also look out for upcoming baby related posts including a nursery tour because we are due to have our very first child in early October.

Enjoy your week!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06543118546560759488noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3929141456990376009.post-86743267552686586162014-06-10T11:22:00.001+12:002014-06-10T11:22:11.438+12:00New House!!

In January we found out that we are expecting our first child! This was great news, a little unexpected but still great news. I had a pretty easy pregnancy up until about the end of April. Up until this point I had had zero morning sickness and very little nausea. However at the end of April I started suffering from chronic headaches that would increase in intensity as they went on and would not go away. I was diagnosed with Inter-cranial Hypertension, which in basic terms is an increased fluid buildup and pressure within the brain and spine. To treat this I have had to undergo a Lumbar Puncture to reduce the fluid build up and also to measure the pressure itself. This was not as straight forward as it sounds, the whole procedure which is meant to take 30mins instead took 2 hours and instead of 1 needle they used 4 needles (they kept hitting vertebrae which in turn would bend their needles). Following the lumbar puncture I then suffered from a low pressure headache (previously I was suffering from a high pressure headache) which resulted in my being on strict flat bed rest in hospital for 5 days.

Combine all of this with the fact that at the beginning of April one of our administrators took extended leave due to having to undergo a back operation which meant that my hours increased from 30 to 40+ hours a week I was very very busy with just work and trying to manage my headaches.

Then during an obstetrician appointment (my midwife referred me due to the inter-cranial hypertension) they discovered that I am also suffering from Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) just to add to the <strike>misery</strike> complications.

To top it all off our landlord then told us that she would not be renewing our fixed term and we would need to find somewhere new to live, which is proving particularly hard in the current Auckland rental market.

So all of these things piled on top of each other, means I have had almost zero energy to focus on anything else except making it through my working week and growing a healthy baby.
It was a 'bring a plate' occasion.

For those of you who are not from New Zealand or don't know kiwi slang, 'bring a plate' means to bring a dish to be shared with everyone for a meal.

I decided to make a giant chocolate cake cooked in a roasting dish as it needed to feed large numbers.

I wanted to use a recipe that was quick, basic, easy and wouldn't take long to make from start to finish.

After a quick google, I came across this great recipe from the blog Bridget's Readings, Ramblings, Recipes and Randoms

Here is the recipe I used for those that are interested. The original can be found here.
I did change up the original recipe mainly to fit what was in my cupboard but also cause I felt like it.

Mix together in a big bowl:

3 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder
pinch salt
3/4 cup cocoa
1 1/2 cups sugar

Mix together in a little bowl:

1/4 cup oil
2 eggs
1 cup milk
2 tsp Vanilla Essence

Pour the wet into the dry ingredients and mix, then add 1 cup boiling water and mix again. Don’t be freaked out when it looks like a sloppy mess, it’ll come right.

Bake at about 160c until it’s done.

To check if it was done I used a wooden skewer to poke the cake until the skewer came out dry (no uncooked batter on it).

I cooled the cake directly in the roasting dish (this took about an hour or so) so that I could then transport the cake to the party easily.

To finish it off, I iced it with a quick chocolate icing recipe of cocoa powder, icing sugar and hot water. I didn't use any specific measurements for this, just eyeballed it until I had the consistency I wanted.

I forgot to take a picture of the cake all iced, but here is one after it came out out of oven.

Today I'm sharing with you a blog by one of my closest friends Caleb.

He writes over at Combat Fitness, a blog all about combating fitness and going from Fat to Fit.

A bit of background story....

Way back in 2012 Caleb decided to pursue his dream of being in the military. In order to accomplish this dream of his, he had to go from 'Fat to Fit'. As his friend, I have witnessed him accept this challenge head on and seen him charge before my very eyes {see pic below} losing a whopping 23kg's. He did this without a gym membership and expensive equipment just his own motivation to keep going.

Now that he has transformed himself into 'Fit' he has taken up blogging about both his weight loss and fitness journey and using the knowledge and skills he has learned along the way to help others on their journeys from 'Fat to Fit'.

Make sure you check him out and give him some encouragement.

You can find him over on his blog here or check out his Facebook page!

p.s. lookout for him in future right here on Rambling Kiwi, I am going to see if he will do a guest post on a beginners workout for those of you who are wanting to go Fat to Fit but don't know where to start.

Now that the hubby and I are living out on our own again, I have begun meal planning again in order to both save money and stay organised.

I first became a fan of meal planning back in 2012 (the hubby and I were living on our own) not long after I was made redundant and we had to learn to live on only one income for the first time ever. I will tell you now, we were not the most intelligent people when it came to budgeting and living within our means when we had two incomes coming into our house. We were both working well paid 42+ hour a week jobs which meant we were getting a lot of money, put getting paid alternate fortnights onto that and we were getting close to 1500 a week in wages. We did not save! I repeat again we did not save! At least definitely not as well as we should have, so when I was made redundant we did not have any sort of rainy day fund behind us which meant quickly learning to live on a very small budget.

During that time I learnt how to live on $60 a week for two people, two cats and run a house. I found my best option at the time was to shop fortnightly as that gave me a budget of $120 to work with which is a little easier then $60.

Now that I am back working again, the hubby has a much better job; we are much better off than before (and yes we are now saving, really saving, true saving in case something similar happens again) but I still prefer to budget out our wages and stick to it!

Currently I budget $500 a month on groceries. This is a large amount I know that, especially for two people and one cat. But it is a budget, not a target. From that $500 I budget $250 a fortnight. $200 in the main shop and $50 for top-ups in the second week (fresh fruit and veges, milk, bead & anything fresh we may require for meals planned).

At the moment we are finding that we are using the full $250 a fortnight, that is mainly due to the fact we are still setting ourselves up in our house and therefore are still buying a lot of basics for our pantry (baking ingredients, stocking our freezer with meat {when on special}, cleaning products etc).

We are hoping that once we have stocked our pantry and freezer enough we will only need around $150 a fortnight (including the second week top-up). Any money left over in our monthly grocery budget at that point, will stay in our grocery budget for the future. Sometimes things come up, a last minute dinner or summer BBQ invite, a shared lunch at work. Plus it is always nice to have a small cushion in your budget. If we find that we are grossly over budgeting then we will look at our budget and reallocate some of the money elsewhere (most likely to paying off debt faster).

This post was meant to be about how I meal plan and write a grocery list to accompany but it has instead turned into a background story and a grocery budget explanation. So I will leave that for another post. In future I will be putting a meal plan and accompanying grocery list up on here every fortnight (or there abouts), as well a possibly a recipe if the meal plan calls for a particular one.

If you would like a small run down of our whole budget, let me know and I will discuss with the hubby whether that is an option {personal info, you get the picture}. However I may look at doing a post about how I go about making my budget using an example income.
Lovely Readers...Apologies for the delayed publishing of this blog post. So delayed in fact that this lovely lady married her hubby yesterday! Enjoy this post and look out for a post about their amazing wedding coming soon :)

In January two of the Hubby and I's closest friends D & C are getting married.

Last Saturday night was us girls chance to toast this amazing event in their lives by celebrating C's Hens day/night. And toasting we certainly did!

It all began at 10:15am with C jumping off the Sky Tower. This was all a huge surprise to her, she had no idea what was install for her over the course of the day and night.

Then all us girls and our inaugural guy (C's brother - Mr Gay World) headed off on a Wine Tour.

We stopped at three amazing wineries where we sampled 7 different wines at each vineyard and also learnt little tidbits and facts about wine making and vineyards in general.

For example....Do you know why they plant red, pink, white or yellow rose bushes at the end of the rows of vines? No?! Well we found out that they are planted for two reasons. Firstly the colour depicts the variety of grape that is planted on that row. Pink and red symbolise a red grape variety and white and yellow symbolise a white grape variety. Secondly, if a Blight disease is going through the vines, the roses will show black spots first before the grape vines, enabling the growers to spray the vines before they becoming infected.

Our first stop of the day was at Soljan's Winery where we learnt all about the art of making wine, champagne and sparkling wine. We also learnt the key difference between what is considered a champagne and a sparkling wine. Sparkling wines are generally just a white wine that has had CO2 put into it.

The second stop for the day was at Matua Valley Wines, this vineyard had the most amazing tasting room. It had gorgeous big windows covering all the walls which allowed you to look out over the grounds and the sun to stream in.

Our last stop on the tour was at Westbrooke Wineries, here we indulged in some sparkling wine while eating our picnic lunch before having our tasting in our very own private tasting room.

We had some time to kill, so decided to head over to The Riverhead Tavern. This was our chance to have some coffee and <strike>sober up</strike> re-energize ourselves for the big night ahead.

For our evening entertainment, we had exclusive use of a nightclub on K'Road where we danced our feet away and indulged in a few drinks :)

Overall it was an amazing day and night and the perfect send off for Candy as she embarks into married life with her high school sweetheart!!
I know I know it's super close to Christmas, but this place is awesome. It is close to my work and my parents and not too far for the Hubby to get to work. The rent is also hugely affordable which is great. It will be awesome to finally move out of my parents house {again}, but I will miss living with my sister and folks. I will write a whole post dedicated to moving into our new gorgeous little unit.
